Mark is currently a Software Engineer at HaL Software Systems in Austin, TX. He is part of a five person team in charge of maintaining and extending an SGML filtering gateway for the wonderful tech writers at HaL. Mark's experience with SGML all started just by chance when he was volunteered to aid Steven DeRose, who was delivering an introduction to SGML and Hypertext at Hypertext '92 in San Antonio, TX. As a result of this fortuitous event, Mark's SGML experience has blossomed in the Web world. He righteously evangelizes valid HTML, sometimes to his own demise. He maintains the HaL HTML Validation Service and the HaL HTML Check Toolkit available at http://www.hal.com/~markg/WebTechs/. Mark can also be found religiously answering Dr. Web (http://www.stars.com/Dr.Web/) technical queries from HTML and WWW neophytes world-wide. Finally, Mark is a co-founder and the current Director of the Austin WWW Users Group whose membership is nearing 200, and he is a member of the Board of Directors on the Austin Area Multimedia Alliance.
Mark was graduated by Texas A&M University in Computer Science in 1990 (Bachelors - my third try!) and 1992 (Masters). Whoop! Mark has willfully attended conferences such as AIIM 92, SGML 92 and 93, and CALS 92 and 93. Mark can be found on the weekends laying waste to rust and grim on his nearly-complete frame-off restoration of a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS-5 (grunt, grunt!) while reciting his favorite quotes from movies such as Fletch, Raising Arizona, Tombstone, Stripes, and the Blues Brothers.
